Zelenskyy to meet Trump at G7 summit in Canada
The next G7 summit will continue in Canada until Tuesday, June 17. A meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump is planned on the sidelines of the summit
A White House official announced late last night that Trump is scheduled to meet with Zelenskyy, Axios reports.
"The president and his team will have many international meetings. Important topics include defense support for Ukraine, sanctions, economic cooperation, and investments in our military-industrial complex," Zelesnkyy's aide Andriy Yermak later informed.
Additionally, Trump is set to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during the summit.
The 51st G7 summit is taking place in the western Canadian province of Alberta, in the remote resort town of Kananaskis. It involves leaders of the G7 member countries: the U.S., Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Representatives of the European Union and heads of non-G7 states invited by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are also attending. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed his participation in the summit. For the first time, the summit includes the recently elected German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
Among the main topics of the summit are strengthening peace and security, with Russia's war against Ukraine being a particularly important issue. Participants will also discuss military operations in the Middle East, including ways to prevent further escalation of the conflict in the region.
The summit will also address U.S. tariffs, which G7 leaders, Claudia Sheinbaum, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen want to discuss with Trump.
In addition, the G7 countries intend to discuss a possible reduction in the price cap on oil from Russia to $45 per barrel. The corresponding initiative is contained in the European Commission's draft of a new package of sanctions against Russia. As Reuters noted recently, most G7 countries are ready to lower the price cap on Russian oil without the U.S.
Other topics at the summit include the supply of minerals, the use of artificial intelligence, and more.
- Canada began its G7 presidency in January. It will last until the end of the year.
