White House unlikely to change position on Russia-Ukraine war soon - U.S. diplomat

It would be naive to expect and watch what further atrocities Russia must commit for the current White House policy to change. It is far more realistic to assume that they will continue to follow the chosen course

Michael Carpenter, former U.S. ambassador to the OSCE, said this on Espreso TV.

“I personally don’t give much weight to President Trump’s loud statements like ‘Stop Vladimir’ or ‘Putin has completely lost his mind.’ These phrases seem like rhetoric aimed solely at the domestic electorate. But in the end, actions matter more than words,” he said.

According to the diplomat, we have seen no real actions from this administration aimed at inflicting significant losses on Russia.

“And this is despite the fact that the war has remained extremely bloody over the past five months since this administration came to power, not to mention previous years of systematic human rights violations, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. What is happening in Ukraine leaves no doubt: it is an attempt by an imperial state to brutally subjugate its neighbor, using methods that should have long been left in the past,” Carpenter said.

He added that the Trump administration fully understands this.

“It would be naive to wait and watch what other atrocities must happen to force it to change course. It is much more realistic to assume it will continue following its chosen path. If I were a Ukrainian diplomat, I would urge European countries to act more actively under the current circumstances and help change the approach. There is very little reason to hope for a radical shift in the Trump administration’s position on the conflict. Vice President J.D. Vance openly stated that, in his view, there is no path to victory for Ukraine. Such a conclusion is completely unfounded. There is a path to Ukrainian victory, but it requires steady resources and unwavering support from Western partners. Despite this, that assessment remains the official position of the current administration,” the diplomat concluded.

  • Everything Trump does is leading the U.S. into deep isolation, as the world is adapting to cooperate without the United States. Meanwhile, Russia is so weak that it’s now in a state of desperation and recklessness.
