
U.S. opposes adding Ukraine support pledge to G7 statement
The United States does not support including a clause on further support for Ukraine in the Group of Seven's (G7) summer statement
Politico reported the information, citing sources.
According to the publication, Washington is also reluctant to label Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine as “illegal” in the draft communiqué.
From May 20 to 22, finance ministers and central bank governors of the Group of Seven are meeting in the Canadian town of Banff to exchange views and discuss current global economic and financial challenges.
This meeting precedes the 51st G7 summit, which will take place from June 15 to 17 in the village of Kananaskis, Alberta. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been invited to attend.
The G7 is an informal political forum that includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union also takes part in G7 meetings but does not have voting rights on the annual summits.
