U.S., European officials near agreement on 30-day Ukraine-Russia truce
The United States and European Union partners finalize a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine
Reuters reports this with reference to a diplomatic source in France.
According to the source, if Russia rejects this proposal, Washington and the Europeans will jointly impose new sanctions against Moscow. However, it was not specified what the restrictions might include.
"We're not completely with a finalised project, but we hope that we're at a moment of convergence," said the diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"What could happen in the coming hours and days, there could be an announcement of a ceasefire either of 30 days or compartmentalized, which is still being discussed."
The source added that discussions between the American and European sides intensified last week. According to him, French and U.S. Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump spoke about the ceasefire proposal on Thursday, May 8.
"We felt in the discussions with the Americans a certain irritation towards the Russian posture, the lack of reactivity and seriousness in its responses to what was proposed before," the source said. "The decision is practically taken."
- On May 8, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said that the United States wants Russia and Ukraine to start a dialogue with each other. He also noted that the United States wants to understand what Russia wants to end the war.
