U.S. asks Ukraine to take in deported migrants — media
After taking office in early 2025, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump approached Ukraine with a request to accept deported American migrants
The Washington Post reported the information, citing relevant documents.
The documents do not indicate Kyiv's official position on the proposal, but one Ukrainian diplomat informed the U.S. Embassy that the government would respond once it formulated its stance.
Later, an unnamed Ukrainian diplomat told U.S. colleagues that Ukraine indeed has "solid experience in bringing back its citizens after they were deported by the United States," but the government in Kyiv is facing the realities of "wartime."
According to the WP, Ukraine has not yet accepted any citizens of third countries deported from the U.S., and there are no signs that Kyiv has seriously considered the American proposal.
Two unnamed Ukrainian officials stated that this issue never reached the highest levels of leadership, and one emphasized that he was unaware of any "political demands" from Washington regarding Ukraine's willingness to accept deported migrants.
