UK PM urges Putin to show commitment to peace during Kyiv visit
On Saturday, May 10, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged Vladimir Putin to demonstrate his commitment to peace, warning of sanctions from the UK and the U.S. if the Kremlin leader refuses to agree to a ceasefire
He made this statement during a press conference in Kyiv after the Coalition of the Willing meeting.
"It’s been almost two months since you (Ukrainians) agreed to the idea of a 30-day ceasefire. During this time, Russia launched some of the most devastating attacks on civilians, destroying lives, homes, and families. And this is what Russia offers instead of peace, along with trying to deceive, delaying and ignoring calls for ending the war," he emphasized.
That’s why, as Starmer stressed, the UK, together with the United States, is openly addressing Putin: "If you are serious about peace, now is your chance to show it."
"It’s about an unconditional 30-day ceasefire with immediate negotiations following the ceasefire. No additional conditions, no delays," he concluded.
Starmer threatens new UK, U.S. sanctions against Russia
"Putin wants conditions. Instead of a ceasefire, he organized a military parade, throwing another challenge. He refuses, despite our numerous calls and those from Ukraine. All leaders of the Coalition of Willing advocated for an immediate ceasefire without any conditions, urging Putin that if he does not return to the path of peace, we will respond," emphasized the British Prime Minister.
According to him, if Russia refuses the 30-day ceasefire, Britain, together with the U.S., will impose new sanctions on Russia.
"Together with President Trump, we will strengthen sanctions, enhance our defensive aid to Ukraine, to force Russia to come to the negotiating table. This is what we discussed today," he added.
He added that the participants also discussed concrete proposals “on land, at sea, in the sky”.
"At this meeting of the Coalition of the Willing with partners across Europe and around the world, we united for the future peace and security of Ukraine, discussing concrete proposals on land, at sea, in the sky. We want Ukraine to look into the future with confidence, so we are ready to help rebuild the Ukrainian economy. We are ready to assist in the recovery of Ukraine on the ground as soon as a ceasefire is achieved," he concluded.
- On Saturday, May 10, 2025, the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing met in Kyiv. As a result, they supported an unconditional and complete ceasefire in Ukraine for 30 days, which is to begin on Monday, May 12.
