Trump administration seeks to reassure U.S. Congress on Greenland purchase plans
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is trying to convince senators that there will be no military attack on Greenland; instead, they want to pressure Denmark to sell the territory
Andrii Dobrianskyi, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, stated this on Espreso TV.
"There is information that yesterday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the Greenland issue with various senators who chair different committees in the House of Representatives. He promised them there would be no military invasion of Greenland. He also said that all of this is merely the Trump administration's pressure on Denmark to get them to sell Greenland. In other words, there will be some kind of deal regarding Greenland, not an attack. However, the Trump administration, specifically Marco Rubio, promised a few weeks ago that there would be no attack on Venezuela. So it's unclear whether he should be believed or not," Dobrianskyi said.
According to him, even if Donald Trump wanted to seize Greenland militarily, the American military is not ready for such a scenario. Currently, for example, the entire concentration of U.S. Navy forces is focused on South America.
"We also know that the U.S. Navy is currently focused on another territory - South America. This isn't just about Venezuela. Their concentration of forces is also directed toward Central America, particularly the Panama Canal. Therefore, even if President Donald Trump wanted to attack Greenland, in my opinion, American military forces are not sufficiently coordinated right now to maintain two fronts - especially one against a NATO ally. I think we need to wait and see. However, we can see how important the statement by European foreign ministers is for professional diplomats - that this territory remains for the Greenland community," he added.
What's happening between the U.S. and Greenland
In May, Donald Trump threatened to annex Greenland, stating he would not rule out using military force to incorporate the island into the United States.
On June 9, French President Emmanuel Macron declared that Greenland is "not for the taking" amid U.S. rhetoric regarding the Danish island.
On August 27, Denmark's Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. ambassador over intelligence about American influence operations in Greenland aimed at strengthening opposition to Copenhagen.
On December 22, 2025, Donald Trump appointed a U.S. ambassador to Greenland - Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. Following this, Denmark stated that the U.S. cannot annex the island under the pretext of international security. Shortly after, Jeff Landry claimed that the Trump administration is not trying to subjugate anyone or seize anyone's country.
On January 4, Katie Miller, wife of Donald Trump advisor on domestic security Stephen Miller, posted a map showing Greenland colored in the colors of the U.S. flag.
Trump subsequently stated that Greenland is necessary for the United States given its strategic location.
Meanwhile, media outlets report that the U.S. likely seeks to "use a window of opportunity" to establish control over Greenland, an autonomous country within Denmark, before its independence day - July 4, 2026.
Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen believes that if the U.S. attacks Greenland, everything will collapse, including NATO.
Following Trump's new statements about U.S. control over Greenland, seven European countries issued a joint statement emphasizing that allies have intensified their efforts.
