U.S. aims to secure Greenland control ahead of July 4 Independence Day
The United States is probably seeking to use a window of opportunity in order to establish control over the island of Greenland, an autonomous country within Denmark, before its independence day on July 4, 2026
Politico writes about this, citing sources.
According to officials, Washington may attempt to establish control over Greenland in the coming months.
Specifically, they believe that this could happen before the midterm elections in the U.S., which will take place on November 3, as well as before Independence Day on July 4.
The article adds that the methods would likely differ from those used in Venezuela, and that instead of a military operation, Washington could resort to using a campaign of political influence to change the current balance.
What is happening between the U.S. and Greenland
In May, Donald Trump threatened to annex Greenland, stating that he did not rule out the use of military force to incorporate the island into the United States.
Subsequently, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared that her country would not yield to unacceptable pressure from the U.S. regarding autonomous Greenland within Denmark.
On June 9, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Greenland was not there to be taken, against the backdrop of United States rhetoric concerning the island within Denmark.
On August 27, Denmark's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the U.S. ambassador over intelligence information about American influence operations in Greenland aimed at strengthening opposition to Copenhagen.
On December 22, 2025, Donald Trump appointed an American ambassador to Greenland - Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. Following this, Denmark stated that the States could not annex the island under the pretext of international security.
Shortly thereafter, Jeff Landry stated that the Trump administration was not going to try to subjugate anyone or seize anyone's country.
On January 4, Katie Miller, the wife of American leader Donald Trump's homeland security advisor Stephen Miller, published a map on which the island of Greenland was colored in the colors of the United States flag.
Trump subsequently stated that Greenland was necessary for the United States given its strategic location.
