Polish President Karol Nawrocki is a strong supporter of Poland’s firm position in NATO, backs strengthening NATO’s eastern flank, and understands the strategic importance of Ukraine for Poland’s security

Polish historian Andrzej Nowak said this in an interview with Espreso.

“The election of Karol Nawrocki as president is often portrayed by unsympathetic propaganda as a choice of a different political direction in international policy than the one Poland has followed and represented for the past several decades, but this image is false,” he said.

According to Nowak, Karol Nawrocki is a determined advocate of a strong Polish stance in NATO, supports reinforcing NATO’s eastern flank, and recognizes the strategic significance of Ukraine for the future security of both Poland and all of Europe.

“Like most of Polish society, he responds to the current political situation by seeking a pragmatic approach in relations with all neighbors. For him, it is especially important that Poland not simply echo German policy, but speak with its own sovereign voice within the European Union and ensure the presence of the United States in the entire European defense system. This is in contrast to Germany and France, which are clearly trying to push the United States out of Europe—a move that would be extremely dangerous for both Poland and Ukraine,” the historian added.

He stated that he believes Nawrocki is the most important guarantor of maintaining NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe and continuing NATO’s fundamental role in supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian imperialism.

  • On Sunday, June 1, Poland held the second round of its presidential election. The winner was Karol Nawrocki, the candidate from the Law and Justice party. The margin between him and his opponent, Rafal Trzaskowski from the Civic Platform, was less than 2%. The current Polish leader, Andrzej Duda, congratulated his successor.

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also congratulated Karol Nawrocki on his election victory.

  • On June 3, the newly elected President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, thanked President Zelenskyy on his social media page X for his congratulations, expressing hope for continued cooperation between the two countries.
