Nawrocki may shift Poland’s Ukraine policy after taking office — Duda
On Saturday, June 28, the sitting President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, arrived in the Ukrainian capital on an unannounced visit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded him the Order of Freedom
Poland’s presidential office reported this.
"Polish President Andrzej Duda has arrived in Kyiv. A meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is planned," the statement reads.
At Kyiv Central Station, Polish President Andrzej Duda was welcomed by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. He shared this on his social media account X.
"I was pleased to greet Ukraine's true friend, Polish President Andrzej Duda, at Kyiv Central Station this morning," he wrote.
The Ukrainian foreign minister noted that Duda had supported Ukraine during "the most difficult times of Russia's full-scale aggression."
"We are grateful to him and all Poles who have shown true solidarity with Ukraine. Our guest will celebrate Ukraine's Constitution Day with us and meet with President Zelenskyy," the diplomat added.
Zelenskyy awarded Duda the Order of Freedom
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the current President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, the Order of Freedom. Decree No. 439/2025 was published on the president’s website.
“For outstanding personal merits in strengthening Ukrainian-Polish international cooperation, supporting Ukraine’s state sovereignty and territorial integrity, I hereby decree: to award the Order of Freedom to Andrzej Duda — President of the Republic of Poland,” the document states.
Note: This distinction is the highest state award of Ukraine that can be conferred on foreign nationals.
Duda’s statement on new Polish President’s stance toward Ukraine
During a joint press briefing with Zelenskyy, Duda suggested that after taking office, newly elected Polish President Karol Nawrocki might change his rhetoric toward Ukraine, Ukrinform reports.
“From the presidential desk, the world looks a bit different than from the position of any other Polish politician, especially a candidate during elections. So, the viewpoint influences the perspective,” Duda emphasized when asked if he had spoken with Nawrocki about Ukraine, particularly regarding the new president’s critical stance on Ukraine’s NATO and EU membership.
He said he often meets with Nawrocki when both have time.
“We have already had preliminary talks on this topic (about Ukraine),” Duda stressed.
He added that we need to wait five weeks until Nawrocki becomes the full-fledged president and takes the first steps regarding relations with Ukraine.
- On June 10, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski affirmed that Warsaw will continue to support Ukraine following the presidential election victory of Karol Nawrocki.
