NATO divided on Ukraine's path to membership — Turkish FM Fidan
NATO does not have a unified opinion regarding Ukraine's membership, and discussions within the Alliance have been ongoing for a long time
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said this during a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha in Kyiv.
"The issue of NATO and Ukraine is a discussion that has been going on within NATO for a long time. There are different visions and parameters. Especially considering the realities of the ongoing war, there is no specific consensus on this issue even within NATO. And member countries have different approaches. Of course, negotiations on this will continue. NATO has a preventive form of security guarantee. Here, we need to consider what form of cooperation will be most beneficial, including for Ukraine," said the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
He reported that he had not discussed this issue with the Russian side during his visit to Moscow on the eve of his trip to Kyiv.
"There is a European position, an American position, and our position. This issue was not on the agenda during negotiations in Russia. This is an ongoing process," Fidan said.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin demands the official exclusion of NATO membership for former Soviet countries, including Georgia and Moldova, in exchange for ending the war in Ukraine.
Donald Trump's special representative Keith Kellogg stated in an interview with ABC News that the United States is ready to discuss Russia's demands regarding the non-expansion of NATO to the east.
