Ahead of the U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska, most Americans doubt President Donald Trump can make the right call on the Russia-Ukraine war

This is based on data from a Pew Research Center survey, as reported by Politico.

Almost 60% of respondents said they are "not very confident" or "not confident at all" that Trump can make a "wise decision" regarding Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II.

In an early August survey, Democrats expressed significantly less confidence in the president’s decision-making than Republicans.

But Trump has also lost trust among Republicans: 73% said they are "somewhat" or "very confident" in Trump’s ability to handle the war, down from 81% in July 2024.

Americans are evenly divided on whether the U.S. has an obligation to help Ukraine defend itself, with Democrats far more likely to support U.S. aid to Ukraine.

Fewer Americans than in March now believe that Trump overly supports Russia in the war. This shift occurred after Trump in recent months publicly changed his stance, becoming increasingly critical of Russia.

  • On August 14, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that U.S. President Donald Trump, during his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, wants to use all available levers to establish peace in Ukraine.
  • Pro-Ukraine demonstrations are happening in Anchorage, Alaska's biggest city, where U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are set to meet.
