Merz backs Taurus missile supply to Ukraine if allies agree
Germany's soon-to-be chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that he has consistently supported the supply of TAURUS long-range missiles to Ukraine — provided the decision is coordinated with European partners
DW reported the information.
"I have always said that I would do it (agree to supply Ukraine with TAURUS missiles - ed.), but only with the consent of European partners," Merz said.
The probable future German Chancellor and leader of the Christian Democratic Union noted that several countries are already supplying Ukrainians with their cruise missiles to protect against Russian invaders.
Merz noted that the UK, France, and the United States are among the countries that have already supplied Ukraine with missiles.
He emphasized that if a suitable agreement is reached, Germany should also participate in such deliveries. In his view, the Ukrainian army should transition from purely defensive operations to more proactive measures.
“The Ukrainian armed forces have been merely reacting for three years. It’s time for them to start shaping the course of events,” the politician said.
As a potential use for TAURUS missiles, he pointed to the destruction of land routes connecting Russia to occupied Crimea, which are critical to the logistics of the Russian army.
- On March 17, Germany announced a new aid package for Ukraine, which included Gepard anti-aircraft systems, Vector drones, and ammunition.
