Hungary refuses to support EU summit’s final document on Ukraine
The final document of the European Council regarding the summit on Ukraine was supported by all EU member states except Hungary
This is stated on the European Council’s website.
In the document, the EU reaffirms its support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as its “peace through strength” approach and readiness to increase pressure on Russia through new sanctions and the freezing of Russian assets.
“The text set out in document EUCO 11/25 was firmly supported by 26 Heads of State or Government. The European Council will revert to the issue at its next meeting,” the statement says.
At the same time, an EU official told European Pravda that Hungary did not support the final document.
“EU leaders have reached a common position that, at this moment, there are essentially no negotiations taking place with Russia. They also exchanged views on how the EU and Ukraine can influence this process,” the source said.
During the summit, European leaders also discussed the situation at the front and the results of negotiations conducted by the U.S. with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
- Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that the decision on Ukraine’s EU membership is being blocked by one country—Hungary. In his opinion, when the final decision is made, Hungary will look at U.S. policy.
- On March 15, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán put forward 12 demands to the EU, one of which was: “Union, but without Ukraine.”
