Hungarian FM accuses Poland of hindering Trump’s Russia-Ukraine 'peace efforts'
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó criticized the actions of the Polish government, accusing it of trying to obstruct Donald Trump's 'peace efforts' regarding Russia's war against Ukraine
He wrote about this on his Facebook page.
In his statement, Szijjártó emphasized that Polish officials, including the prime minister and the foreign minister, continue to ignore the principles of the rule of law.
"While they trample on the rule of law in Poland—and Brussels allows this—they lecture us on what is in Europe's best interest," said the head of Hungary's foreign ministry.
Szijjártó stressed that there is currently a real opportunity for peace, but in his opinion, the Polish government is hindering it.
"They think this is the continuation of the war, we think this is peace. They think it's about killing and destroying, we think it's about establishing peace. And now there is a real chance for peace: Donald Trump's peace efforts may succeed. It's a shame that the Polish government, along with the rest of Brussels, is trying to block peace talks," he added.
He also expressed concern that Brussels' position, supported by Poland, could lead to the isolation of the European Union.
"The overwhelming majority of the world, led by the United States, including Hungary, seeks peace, while twenty-six EU member states, including Poland, voted on Thursday to continue the war. It's a shame," the diplomat concluded.
- On February 14, Hungary blocked the opening of the first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine's membership in the European Union, titled Fundamentals, which focuses on the rule of law.
