The Brooklyn Museum changed the label for a painting by Ilya Repin, replacing "Russia" with "Ukraine," since the canvas depicts a landscape of the Ukrainian town of Chuhuiv

Art historian Oksana Semenik stated this on Espreso TV.

"In fact, the issue was not only about Ilya Repin’s nationality and identity, but also that this painting is a landscape of Chuhuiv, and Repin himself wrote that it is specifically Chuhuiv. But for some reason, this American museum labeled it 'Winter Landscape – Russia,' even though the place is Chuhuiv," Semenik noted.

According to the art historian, there was also communication with the Brooklyn Museum regarding the fact that Ilya Repin was listed as a Russian artist. Now, they have removed any mention of nationality altogether and left only the place of birth and death.

"Museums often do this to avoid conflicts. As for the title of this painting, we discussed it for a long time—the communication with them started back in 2023. It took them two years to finally make these changes," Semenik added.
