Baltic states issue joint statement backing Ukraine’s NATO, EU bid
The Foreign Affairs Committees of the parliaments of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania issued a joint statement expressing full support for Ukraine on its path to membership in NATO and the European Union
The statement was released by Žygimantas Pavilionis, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Lithuanian Parliament.
“Ukraine’s victory over Russian aggression and its membership in NATO will strengthen a just and lasting peace not only in Ukraine but across Europe, and will help preserve the rules-based international order worldwide,” the statement reads.
The officials also acknowledged that Ukraine’s NATO membership would provide a more effective and sustainable foundation for ensuring Euro-Atlantic security.
Specifically, the committees of the three countries pledged to:
- Support Ukraine until its full victory, including the liberation of all temporarily occupied territories;
- Support Ukraine’s EU membership, aiming to conclude accession talks by 2030;
- Support Ukraine’s path to NATO membership and urge the 2025 NATO summit to take concrete political steps toward Ukraine’s accession;
- Increase defense cooperation with Ukraine and partners, and promote Ukraine’s invitation to the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF);
- Continue pressure on Russia and its allies through tougher sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and legal prosecution for crimes against Ukraine.
The Baltic countries also called on other nations to endorse this statement and take appropriate steps to support Ukraine’s victory and its full integration into the Euro-Atlantic community.
- Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán commented on Ukraine’s EU accession, stating that if it happens, Kyiv will “suck up every euro, forint, and zloty.”
