At UN, U.S. urges Russia-Ukraine talks, threatens sanctions
The United States is urging Moscow to engage constructively to end the war and insists that Russia and Ukraine agree on a bilateral meeting of their leaders
John Kelley, Acting U.S. Alternate Representative to the UN, said this at a UN Security Council meeting on Friday.
“The leadership of Russia and Ukraine must agree to hold a bilateral meeting. President Trump has also stated that numerous measures will be taken if Russia chooses to continue the war. The United States urges the Russian Federation to engage constructively in order to end this war and avoid those consequences,” he said.
Kelly also stressed that Moscow’s recent strikes on Ukraine — which hit residential buildings as well as premises housing the EU and British missions — run counter to all diplomatic efforts.
US diplomat John told the meeting the strikes “cast doubt on the seriousness of Russia’s desire for peace” and demanded that “these strikes on civilian areas must stop immediately”.
- On the night of August 28, the Russian army carried out a massive strike on Ukraine, killing 25 people and injuring 53 in Kyiv.
- Following the large-scale attack, Ukraine initiated an emergency UN Security Council meeting on August 29.
