"All these events have left their mark": Ukrainian diplomat on Trump leaving G7 early
Today in the U.S., a mix of a difficult foreign policy issue about the Iranian-Israeli conflict and protests in the country caused Trump to leave the G7 summit early
This was said by Volodymyr Khandohiy, Ambassador Extraordinary and President of the Ukrainian Association of Foreign Policy, on Espreso TV.
He said, "In the past, some leaders have left international events early, and this will probably happen again. It depends on the situation in world politics, but mostly on what is happening inside their own country. For example, in the U.S. today, there is a complicated foreign policy problem with the Iranian-Israeli conflict. Also, there have been big protests in the U.S. for two days. They are somewhat calming down now, but they are connected to Trump’s birthday celebrations or the day dubbed victory day, which was June 14."
Volodymyr Khandohiy said that all these events might have influenced why U.S. President Donald Trump left the G7 summit. He also said the U.S. may not be ready to agree with the other G7 countries.
He added, "All these events had an effect. But I think Trump also left because the United States is probably not ready to agree with the G7 on many important issues. To avoid showing his different opinion and to not make the divisions bigger in the G7 and NATO, he likely left. He used the situation with the Iranian-Israeli conflict as a reason to do so."
- On June 17, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said that U.S. President Donald Trump would leave the G7 summit early because of the situation in the Middle East. Trump gave a different reason himself.
