Why South Korea refuses to supply weapons to Ukraine
Seoul’s refusal is a big setback, especially since it emerged during an official meeting with Ukraine's Defense Minister. Wasn’t this expected ahead of the visit?
But we should also think about this from another perspective. What exactly should Ukraine be asking for?
The Europeans are starting to realize they can’t provide enough weapons, so now they’re focusing on funding the production of weapons here in Ukraine. Just last week, Denmark gave 130 million euros for producing missiles and drones. This is exactly what Ukraine needs.

Ukraine should focus on raising money for domestic arms production. That way, it won’t need permission to launch missiles at Russian territory, and it won’t have to wait for the U.S. Senate or Hungary to unblock aid.
That’s why the Defense Minister’s trip to South Korea should have focused on cooperation in arms production. The Koreans could supply or sell Ukraine equipment for this, which would benefit them as well. It’s also beneficial for Ukraine, as it would provide weapons in the future and help drive economic growth. Yes, Ukraine needs weapons urgently, but the more we focus on local production, the more resilient we become to changes in the international situation.
This is exactly the kind of support Russia is getting from China, which is supplying thousands of machines to help modernize Russian weapons. And we certainly feel the impact of that.
