U.S. approves possible Patriot system sale to Ukraine worth $179M
The U.S. State Department has approved a possible sale to Ukraine of Patriot air defense systems and related equipment, valued at an estimated $179.1 million
This was reported by the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
The package includes both classified and unclassified spare parts, technical support, software and updates, system modifications and kits, testing equipment, communications gear and accessories, integration services, the Field Surveillance Program, the International Engineering Services Program, technical assistance from U.S. government and contractor representatives, training, as well as engineering and logistics support.
“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” the agency noted.
It added that the sale would enhance Ukraine’s ability to counter current and future threats by equipping it with a stronger air defense system for self-defense and regional security missions.
The sale will not negatively impact U.S. defense readiness.
In addition, the State Department has approved a possible sale to Ukraine of Starlink services and related equipment worth $150 million.
Ukraine's reaction
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal also confirmed the decision, stating:
“The U.S. has approved sales to Ukraine of more than $300 million worth of equipment to support Patriot systems and to purchase and service Starlink.”
“Patriot air defense systems are vital for Ukraine. They protect our people, our cities, and critical infrastructure from relentless Russian air attacks,” he emphasized.
- On August 28, the U.S. State Department also approved a potential $825 million sale of aviation munitions and related equipment to Ukraine.
