Russian agent who spied on military convoys destined for Ukraine, detained in Greece
Greek police has arrested a man in Alexandroupolis port for photographing convoys destined for Ukraine on behalf of Russian intelligence
This was reported by The Guardian, citing AFP.
On Tuesday, April 29, during a joint operation between the police and Greece’s National Intelligence Service, a man suspected of spying for Russia’s GRU was arrested. On Friday, May 2, the suspect was brought before the court.
Police arrested the man in the strategically important port of Alexandroupolis. The port is a key logistics hub for U.S. and NATO operations, facilitating the movement of military equipment to support Ukraine and NATO member states in Eastern Europe.
According to police, the suspect is a 59-year-old Greek citizen of Georgian origin, who “confessed to photographing and filming military equipment under the direction of another individual, to whom he sent the footage via an encrypted app.”
The man, who previously identified himself as a painter, was spying on military convoys headed to Ukraine, as evidenced by video recordings found on his phone. A police source told AFP that the suspect, who had served in the Russian army in his youth, was likely recruited by the Russian GRU through an intermediary, although the man told police he had refused money and sent the materials voluntarily.
On April 29, France officially accused the Russian GRU of carrying out cyberattacks on its government institutions, defense companies, and research centers.
