Diplomat: two reasons behind letting Ukraine hit targets in Russia with Western weapons

Ukrainian diplomat Roman Bezsmertnyi believes that Iran’s supply of ballistic missiles to Russia, along with the destruction of a warehouse containing North Korean ammunition, influenced the decision to lift restrictions on Ukrainian strikes against targets in Russia with Western weapons

He shared this view on Espreso TV.

“Even during the Ramstein group meeting, and especially during the briefing held by U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Brown, it was clear that the military departments of key countries had made positive decisions regarding strikes on Russian territory with their weapons. This includes not only lifting restrictions but also supplying precision weapons. The political leadership of these countries, particularly the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, needed strong reasoning for this decision. As far as I understand, our military and political leadership provided those persuasive arguments at this meeting. Additionally, there was a very emotional speech by the President of Ukraine,” Bezsmertnyi explained.

The diplomat is convinced that the decision to lift restrictions on strikes on Russian territory with Western weapons has already been made.

“In the coming days, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy are expected to visit Kyiv. This suggests that the decision to lift restrictions on using Western weapons against targets in Russia had been made. Another important aspect is how and when this decision will be announced.

Additionally, two key factors likely influenced this decision. First, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ recent strike on a warehouse containing North Korean ammunition and missiles. Second, Iran's recent supply of missiles to Russia. These developments, combined with the discussions at the Ramstein meeting, contributed to the decision to lift the restrictions on strikes against Russian territory,” he added.

  • The United States is close to an agreement to provide Ukraine with longer-range missiles to strike deep into Russia. The decision may be announced this fall. Reuters wrote about this, citing American officials.
