"We will be able to reopen our dialogue with the U.S.": International expert on Ukraine's joint UK-France peace plan

Candidate of Political Science and international relations expert Stanislav Zhelihovskyi believes that the peace plan that the United Kingdom and France will work together on with Ukraine aims to build a European vision

He stated his opinions with Espreso TV.

"I think this is, so to speak, an attempt to develop an alternative document to the vision of Donald Trump's administration and the vision in Kyiv. And I want to remind you that we (Ukraine - ed.) presented the Ukrainian Peace Formula, as well as the Victory Plan and the Resilience Plan. And this was initiated by our state, although, of course, with the support of our partners. Relevant summits and meetings have already taken place, such as the Global Peace Summit last year. But I believe that now official Kyiv wants to develop a single document together with European partners that would reflect a specifically European-Ukrainian vision or, in general, a European vision. Because Ukraine is part of European processes, and we are moving towards closer integration with European countries," he said.

Stanislav Zhelihovskyi suggests that after this document is reviewed by U.S. President Trump, another plan — an American-European one — could be developed.

"And I think that such a document could be accepted, or at least considered, by Donald Trump, and it is not excluded that another document will then be developed. That is, an American-European one, which would take into account the wishes or vision of Trump and his administration, the perspective of our European partners, and, of course, the vision of the Ukrainian state. And this is basically what we have been talking about before — we would like to develop a single strategy that considers all necessary aspects, including security guarantees, and only then proceed with negotiations with Vladimir Putin. That is why official Kyiv insisted that Europeans participate in the negotiations along with Ukrainians and Americans so that everything could be carefully weighed and thus act as a united front," he believes.

The international expert emphasized that for Ukraine, the main priority now is to restore dialogue with the United States.

"Our main goal, in principle, is to restore dialogue with the United States because, in any case, it will be difficult for us without U.S. support, and this must be understood. Therefore, I think that this effort can reopen our dialogue and renew cooperation. And with the support of Europeans, we will be able to prepare this plan. The main thing for us is to take the initiative," added Stanislav Zhelihovskyi.

Background

On February 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington on a working visit. During a press conference, a dispute arose between Trump, Zelenskyy, and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.

Later, it became known that the joint press conference between Presidents Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump was canceled following the argument.

After the White House altercation, European leaders and U.S. politicians began expressing support for Zelenskyy and Ukraine.

The press secretary for U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration, Karoline Leavitt, announced the U.S. government's intention to halt military financial aid to Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Polish President Andrzej Duda called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to restore his relations with Donald Trump.

Zelenskyy later gave an interview to an American television channel, during which he commented on the situation with Trump.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy should apologize for the conversation with Trump and J.D. Vance escalating into a dispute.
