We should no longer rule out NATO membership for Ukraine, chairman of Munich Security Conference says
Germany and the Western states should not only consider NATO membership for Ukraine, but facilitate Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance
This is reported by Bild, citing the statement of Christoph Heusgen, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference.
“We have to think about what guarantees we can give Ukraine. But I think we should no longer rule out NATO membership for Ukraine,” Heusgen said .
The chairman also believes that Germany and the West should facilitate Ukraine's accession to NATO, despite the fact that former German leader Merkel vetoed the idea in 2008. The situation had changed as a result of Putin’s “breach of international law,” according to him.
Heusgen served as Germany's ambassador to the United Nations and ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief foreign policy advisor.
The chairman also noted that he considers Germany to be the target of Putin's nuclear threats.
“With the threat of nuclear weapons, he is primarily aiming at Germany. Putin is trying to stir up fears and weaken support for Ukraine. We’re back to Cold War logic,” Heusgen added .
