We have to build country on key democratic principles - Poroshenko speaks in Estonian Parliament
The former Ukrainian President (2014-2019) has called for an increased supply of weapons to the country's Armed Forces, strengthened sanctions against Russia, and Putin to be punished for terrorism
"Today I'm in Estonia, in Tallinn. These days are very tense here. Tomorrow there will be a vote on the new composition of the government, and we must be firmly convinced that Estonia's support for Ukraine will be unwavering," Poroshenko told reporters.
"Estonia is a permanent and loyal ally of Ukraine. We have not only common acute security challenges, but also a common future in the United Europe. We strongly condemned the illegal actions and inhumane crimes of the Putin regime in Ukraine. 'Rocket terrorism', mass murders of Ukrainians, ethnic cleansing on the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine are all war crimes for which Putin and his supporters will be held accountable at the International Tribunal," Poroshenko said.
"Estonia wholeheartedly supports our fight against the Russian aggressor and is at the forefront of the international anti-Putin coalition. If you count GDP per capita, Estonia helps Ukraine the most," states the fifth president.
During the meetings, the needs of the Ukrainian army were discussed. "Today, Ukraine needs more weapons to carry out a counteroffensive," Petro Poroshenko emphasizes. "The aggressor must be punished tactically and strategically so that he no longer has the desire to attack," said the head of the committee, Marko Michkelson.
The interlocutors discussed strengthening sanctions against Russia. Petro Poroshenko emphasized the need to unblock Ukrainian ports for the export of agricultural products. He suggested arresting Russian ships illegally transporting Ukrainian grain and Russian oil. The issue of Europe's energy security was also discussed.
Petro Poroshenko thanked Estonia for its principled position on granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country for membership in the European Union.
"Our common task is to start pre-accession negotiations as soon as possible. And the only effective guarantee of security today can only be membership in NATO, so we must continue to persistently promote Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic agenda," Poroshenko said.
During the meetings, both the Speaker of the Parliament of Estonia, Juri Ratas, and the Chairman of the Committee, Marko Mihkelson, drew attention to the need to implement reforms, in particular, regarding anti-corruption policy and strengthening of democratic freedoms.
"Of course, they raised questions about the continuation of reforms in Ukraine, and about the appointment of a Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, and the announcement of a competition for the director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau. And about freedom of speech in Ukraine, and about the inadmissibility of shutting down patriotic television channels. Because one state channel is Putin. We have to build the country on key democratic principles," Poroshenko emphasized.
"Estonia's support in these times - both with weapons, and political, and economic, and post-war reconstruction - will be unwavering," sums up the fifth president.
