Zelenskyy: Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant can’t operate without Ukrainian experts
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant cannot function without Ukrainian technical personnel, and that support from the United States cannot replace their role
He made this statement during a briefing.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the ZNPP will not operate without Ukraine, and even U.S. assistance cannot ensure its operation in Ukraine’s absence.
"America understands perfectly — both technically and politically — that if there is any move toward managing this plant, it will only happen with our technical workers," the president stressed.
He noted that Ukraine is ready to cooperate with the United States on restoring the ZNPP if Russia withdraws from the site. However, despite numerous reports of potential partnerships from various channels, he has not received any official offer.
"Ukraine is not opposed to a partnership with America in this or that direction — in restoring the operation of any infrastructure, any enterprise," the president added.
Zelenskyy also underscored that there are many pressing issues regarding access to water, infrastructure, and the safety of people living in Enerhodar.
In addition, the president expressed confidence that the U.S. and Russia are holding a dialogue about Ukraine's NATO membership, and he noted that any refusal by Ukraine to join NATO — even if backed by support from other countries — would require clear security guarantees in exchange.
On April 22, Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine would not accept legal recognition of the Russian occupation of Crimea, responding to media reports about a potential U.S. proposal on this issue in London on April 23.
