Ukraine war may end during Cyprus's EU presidency — Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says negotiations with European partners and the U.S. have reached a turning point, and expressed hope the war with Russia could end during Cyprus's six-month EU presidency
He made this statement at the opening ceremony of Cyprus's EU Council presidency.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of maintaining sanctions pressure on Russia and continued support for Ukraine from EU countries and the United States. He noted that negotiations with partners, including the United States and participants in the Coalition of the Willing, have approached a new stage that could contribute to a peaceful resolution of the war.
"We note that negotiations have reached a new milestone together with our European partners and, of course, with the U.S. and all participants in the Coalition of the Willing. We understand that this war can end even during your presidency," the president said.
On the eve of this, Zelenskyy arrived in Cyprus to participate in a series of bilateral meetings with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis, as well as with leaders of the European Council and the European Commission. He has already discussed with Cypriot leadership issues of further cooperation, particularly regarding sanctions and support for Ukraine's European integration.
