Joint Expeditionary Force and Zelenskyy unite for lasting peace effort
On May 9, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the efforts of European countries within the Joint Expeditionary Force to achieve a lasting and reliable ceasefire in Ukraine
He announced this via Telegram.
The Joint Expeditionary Force includes the United Kingdom, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.
“We are working together to achieve a ceasefire—a reliable and lasting one, for at least 30 days. Ukraine is ready,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
He also mentioned his phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on May 8, in which Kyiv’s European allies were also involved. The Ukrainian leader stressed that if Russia continues to prolong the war, sanctions must be strengthened.
“The U.S. and Europe know what hits Russia the hardest—what truly pressures Moscow and forces it to consider peace and an end to this war. Moscow must agree to a ceasefire, because only then can true peace begin. We are uniting as many countries as possible so that this pressure—for the sake of peace—can be effective,” the president stated.
On May 8, U.S. President Donald Trump called on both Russia and Ukraine to agree to a full, unconditional ceasefire, warning of new sanctions in case the truce is violated.
