U.S. risks destroying ties with Moscow over Tomahawks for Ukraine — Putin
Russian leader Vladimir Putin says that if the U.S. supplies Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles for long-range strikes deep into Russia, it will lead to the destruction of Moscow's relations with Washington
Reuters reported the information.
Trump said he was disappointed that Putin is not making peace and called Russia a "paper tiger" for its failure to subdue Ukraine. Last week, Putin struck back, questioning whether NATO is not a "paper tiger" due to its inability to stop Russia's advance.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said last month that Washington is considering Ukraine's request for long-range Tomahawks that could strike deep into Russia, including Moscow, although it is unclear whether a final decision has been made.
"This will lead to the destruction of our relations or, at least, those positive trends that have emerged in these relations," Putin said in a video clip published on Sunday by Russian state television reporter Pavel Zarubin.
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States would provide Ukraine with intelligence on energy infrastructure facilities in Russia as they weigh whether to send Kyiv missiles that could be used for such strikes. But one U.S. official and three other sources told Reuters that the Trump administration's desire to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine may be unfeasible because current stockpiles are designated for the U.S. Navy and other purposes.
Tomahawk cruise missiles have a range of 2,500 kilometers, which means that if Ukraine received these missiles, the Kremlin and the entire European part of Russia would be in the crosshairs.
On Thursday, Putin said that the use of Tomahawks is impossible without the direct involvement of U.S. military personnel, and therefore any supply of such missiles to Ukraine would cause a "qualitatively new stage of escalation."
"This will mean a completely new, qualitatively new stage of escalation, including in relations between Russia and the United States," Putin said.
He added that Tomahawks could harm Russia, but it would simply shoot them down and improve its own air defenses.
