Economist and Doctor of Economic Sciences Ihor Burakovskyi notes that for Putin, it is crucial to take control of Ukraine

He said this on the Espreso TV channel.

“The EU has both strengths and weaknesses. The strength lies in the fact that it is a union of countries within the European Union, with all the corresponding consequences. These are advantages, opportunities to share risks, and engage in joint initiatives. However, in terms of military-political power, there are significant problems. This wing of European institutions has either not been developed or has been built in a very minimal form,” Burakovskyi noted.

According to the Doctor of Economic Sciences, Europe must not only make decisions or statements but must clearly work on building its own military capabilities. This could be, in broad terms, a European NATO or some form of a European defense alliance.

“A defense alliance that immediately engages in the current developments. What is needed for this? I think an example from key countries is necessary. These could be France, Germany, the United Kingdom, or other countries. Perhaps a different configuration should be considered, one not directly related to the EU. This could involve Australia under certain conditions, or other countries, such as Japan or other partners from that region,” Burakovskyi suggested.

The Doctor of Economic Sciences also stated that the war can only be fully resolved through military means.

“No matter what Putin says, no matter what agreements we reach now, we are not negotiating peace—we are negotiating a truce, a cessation of hostilities, a ceasefire. This is also very important, but it is not a question of peace.

We must all clearly understand that for Putin, stopping the war is a tactical move. It is very important for him to take full control of Ukraine. And this is the key idea that Trump and his colleagues are trying to evade, saying that it will be addressed later and that we should first stop the shooting. But this is a problem,” Burakovskyi emphasized.

For reference. Ihor Burakovskyi is an economist, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor of the Department of Economic Theory at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, and Chairman of the Board of the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting.
