The remarks were reported by Teraz.

“It would be politically difficult for Zelenskyy to meet with Putin, and the people of Russia would hardly be happy about it, but both understand that, despite possible political losses, dialogue is necessary, otherwise the war will continue,” Fico commented.

The Slovak leader also noted that the war in Ukraine is “more complex than it generally appears.”

  • On September 2, Fico met Putin in Beijing on the sidelines of the SCO summit, where they discussed issues including the shelling of the Druzhba oil pipeline.
  • On September 5, Fico also met Zelenskyy in Uzhhorod, where the two leaders discussed sanctions policy toward Russia and energy issues, which Fico admitted were “diametrically opposed.”
