"Yanukovych's debt" of USD 3 billion: a British court rules in favor of Ukraine
On March 15, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruled in favor of Ukraine in the case of the "Yanukovych's debt" – a USD 3 billion bond loan.
This was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Today, Ukraine has won another decisive victory over the aggressor, this time in the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in the case of the USD 3 billion bonds. The court has ruled that Ukraine's defense against Russia's threats of aggression will have a full and open hearing. Justice will be ours,” the president wrote.
Ukraine's Ministry of Finance reported that the Russian Federation tried to persuade the British court to rule in its favor through a proxy, using a shortened procedure and thus avoiding a detailed investigation. However, the Supreme Court rejected Russia's request.
“The Supreme Court determined in its decision that the strong position of the defense should be examined in a full trial. At this stage, the Supreme Court did not consider the facts of Russia's illegal war against Ukraine, as the appeal "took place before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022," but Lord Carnwath, a judge of the Supreme Court, noted that Russia's further behavior could not be ignored,” the press service of the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.
