Vance suggests Ukraine and Russia will have to cede territory in potential peace deal
JD Vance stated that the United States has presented a “very explicit proposal” to both Russia and Ukraine, outlining a potential path to peace
According to a Bloomberg report, Vance emphasized that it's now up to both parties to either accept the offer or risk the U.S. stepping away from the negotiation process entirely.
Speaking to reporters in India after visiting the Taj Mahal, Vance said the future borders in the war would likely align closely with the current front lines, meaning both sides would need to relinquish some of the territory they presently control.
According to earlier reports by Bloomberg, the U.S. is willing to consider recognizing Russia’s control over Crimea and easing sanctions against Moscow as part of a broader peace agreement. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has maintained that Kyiv will not accept the Russian occupation of Crimea, which is recognized internationally as Ukrainian land.
“There’s going to have to be some territorial swaps,” Vance said, noting that while the final borders may not exactly reflect the current front lines, achieving peace would require both countries to lay down their arms, freeze the conflict, and begin working toward rebuilding their nations.
