The United States is not abandoning its support for Ukraine, but reformatting the model. Probably, this was the reason for the personal meeting between US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Ukrainian authorities

This was stated by political scientist Volodymyr Tsybulko on the Espreso TV channel.

Perhaps, for a certain period, the EU, in particular Germany, will become a leader in supporting Ukraine. This does not mean that the United States is withdrawing, but it will reformat the model of support for Ukraine, the political scientist said.

"The US will reformat the model of support for Ukraine. It seems to me that this was the need for Austin's personal visit and a broad dialogue with Ukrainian authorities," Tsybulko said.

According to him, Lloyd Austin's mission is military and political.

"It is not only about military assistance, but also about certain political signals from the White House and personally from US President Joe Biden," Tsybulko said.

Several factors are very important now, he added.

"The first is a significant reduction in US aid and discussions about the new bill, which is very annoying for the Ukrainian leadership, Ukrainians in general and, most importantly, our military. The second is obviously Ramstein. It is not without reason that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius came to Kyiv after Austin, it is like a certain passing of the baton," the political analyst stressed.

  • On November 20, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin arrived in the Ukrainian capital. He met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
  • The visit of the Pentagon chief to Kyiv took place on the eve of the meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine's Defense in the Ramstein format.
  • During the visit, the US officially announced additional security assistance to meet Ukraine's critical security and defense needs.
  • During the wrap-up briefing, Austin assured of continued assistance to Ukraine and commented on the provision of weapons.
