US convinces South Korea to supply weapons to Ukraine

Seoul has reversed its position on supplying the Ukrainian Armed Forces with weapons and ammunition

In just 3 months, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has changed his position, announcing his intention to supply weapons to the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Yes, there are reservations, but let’s appreciate how beautifully the game has been played.

At the end of January 2023, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg flew to South Korea, urging the hosts to increase assistance to Ukraine. The leaders of the Republic of Korea sympathetically referred to local legislation that prohibits the supply of lethal weapons to countries at war.

"In February, US intelligence intercepted a conversation between two high-ranking South Korean national security officials regarding a US request for ammunition. One of them suggested circumventing the ban by selling them to Poland. The secret was out in the open".

In late April, Yoon Suk-yeol will meet with Joe Biden. On the eve of the visit, he said that "under certain circumstances, the country may go beyond humanitarian or financial assistance to Ukraine." "Certain circumstances" are a situation that the international community cannot tolerate - a large-scale attack on civilians, mass murder, or serious violations of the laws of war. In other words, these are the crimes that Ruscists commit almost every day.

And the easiest for the Republic of Korea to deliver to Ukraine would be... Russian weapons.

In the 90s, the Russian Federation, as the successor to the USSR, had large credit debts to the ROK, and to repay them, the Kremlin handed over 70 BMP-3, 33 BTR-80A, 80 T-80U.

"South Korea has created a modern tank, the K-2 Black Panther, considered one of the best in the world. The KF-21 fighter jet also has excellent parameters. But the development of these "devices" by Ukrainian specialists is a matter of time"

South Korea has created a modern tank K-2 "Black Panther" which is considered one of the best in the world. The KF-21 fighter jet also has excellent parameters. However, it is only a matter of time before Ukrainian specialists master these "devices.”

The Republic of Korea can supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with NATO-standard ammunition.

I would venture to guess that the emergence of "certain circumstances" depends on the outcome of the presidents’ talks.

This is a vivid illustration of a well-known phrase we hear from the Ukrainian command: "No" means for us that everything will happen eventually. But we need to convince our partners a little.
