U.S. blocks Canada’s G7 plan to track Russia’s “shadow fleet” – Bloomberg
The U.S. has rejected Canada’s G7 proposal to establish a task force to crack down on Russia’s “shadow fleet” of oil tankers
This was reported by Bloomberg.
Canada, which holds the G7 presidency this year, is set to host a foreign ministers’ summit in Charlevoix next week.
During negotiations on a joint statement regarding maritime issues, the US pushed for stronger language on China while toning down references to Russia, sources said on condition of anonymity.
Along with vetoing Canada’s proposal for a task force to monitor sanctions violations by Russia’s “shadow fleet,” the US also managed to remove the word “sanctions” from the draft G7 statement, reviewed by the agency. It also replaced references to Russia’s “ability to maintain its war” in Ukraine by replacing it with “earn revenue.”
However, the agency notes that the G7 communiqué is not final until published by consensus, meaning negotiations could still bring significant changes before or during the summit.
- Russia’s expanding shadow fleet could serve not just for oil smuggling but also as a strategic military asset, posing challenges for NATO and exposing vulnerabilities in U.S. sealift capabilities.
