Russia confirms Ukraine's ATACMS strike on ammo depot on its territory
The United States has reportedly lifted restrictions for Ukraine on using long-range weapons against Russian targets, and the recent ATACMS strike is just the beginning
This is reported by Defense Express, a Ukrainian media and consulting company.
On the night of November 19, Ukraine appears to have launched its first-ever strike on Russian soil using ATACMS ballistic missiles. The target was an ammo depot near Karachev, in Russia's Bryansk region, known as the 1046th Logistics Center or the 67th Arsenal of the GRU.
Ukraine's General Staff confirmed the attack, which caused 12 secondary explosions and a detonation at the site, but did not specify which weapons were used. However, Russia's Ministry of Defense confirmed the strike and claimed that six ATACMS missiles were fired, with five allegedly shot down. As usual, Russia reported "no losses."
“In reality, the situation seems different. This wasn’t the first attack on the depot - there was another one on October 9 - and while the depot’s ammunition capacity is smaller than that of other Russian arsenals, there was no large-scale chain reaction explosion,” Defense Express reported.
According to the outlet, it seems that the United States has indeed lifted the previously imposed restriction on using long-range missiles against Russian territory and the range is not limited to just the Kursk region, as some media outlets suggested based on their sources.
“Trusting anything the Kremlin says isn't always wise. It's possible that the 67th GRU arsenal was hit by other weapons, such as the Neptune missile. Normally, the Ukrainian General Staff would mention the involvement of the Ukrainian Navy in such an attack, but that wasn’t the case here,” Defense Express reported.
The outlet notes that by claiming the attack was carried out with ATACMS, the Kremlin has shown once again that its “red lines” are no different from the previous ones. All the talk about "escalation" seems groundless.
