US and Russia to resume negotiations on mutual nuclear weapons control
Russia and the United States are preparing to meet over the next few weeks to discuss the resumption of nuclear weapons facilities inspections under the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START). Relevant negotiations have been suspended since the beginning of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
This is reported by the Bloomberg.
A spokesman for the US State Department confirmed the preparation of a meeting of the bilateral advisory commission but declined to say when and where it will take place. He added that the United States hopes for a productive session.
Bloomberg sources in Moscow said the likely meeting place could be Cairo, Egypt. Russia does not want to hold a commission meeting in Geneva, as Switzerland has joined the sanctions against it in connection with full-scale aggression.
The bilateral advisory commission dealing with practical issues related to the implementation of New START last met in Geneva in October 2021. After the start of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the United States suspended its work.
It is expected that the American side will raise the issue of resuming inspections at the commission's meeting. In August, Russia did not allow us, inspectors, to visit its nuclear facilities, citing visa restrictions for Russians, which, according to it, make it impossible for them to access the United States.
It should be noted that in February 2021, the New START Agreement was extended for five years. The Joe Biden administration proposes that Russia renegotiate the treaty by 2026, including China as a third party.
