For reference. Battles for Ilovaisk, also known as the Ilovaisk cauldron, are military actions that unfolded near the city of Ilovaisk in the Donetsk region during the Russian-Ukrainian war in August 2014. At the initial stage, Ukrainian troops surrounded pro-Russian militants, and from August 24, a significant number of regular Russian troops entered the rear of our group, changing the course of the fighting.

On August 18, in the course of fierce fighting, the Ukrainian security forces, most of which consisted of volunteer battalions, entered Ilovaisk. They were able to take part of the city under their control, but after the arrival of significant forces of regular Russian troops on August 23-24 in the rear of the Ukrainian group from the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as due to the desertion of some Ukrainian units, the Ilovaisk group found itself surrounded.

On the night of August 28-29, Putin appealed to the "militia forces" to open a humanitarian corridor for Ukrainian soldiers who were surrounded. At 8:15 a.m., the Ukrainian military in organized columns started moving from the city along the routes previously agreed with the Russian side. At first, the Ukrainian columns moved unhindered past the Russian fortified positions, but after some time the Russian troops opened fire, shooting the columns on the march.

As of the end of August 2017, the process of identification and reburial of the dead was practically completed. According to the data of the National Military Historical Museum, 368 Ukrainian soldiers died in those battles on August 7-31, 2014, 18 are considered missing.

Ukraine’s Security Service informed the chief of the Russian General Staff about the suspicion, as well as ten Russian military personnel, whose presence was established during the events in August.

On April 8, 2021, Ukraine sent materials to The Hague regarding Ilovaisk battles.

On November 15, 2021, the temporary investigative commission of the Verkhovna Rada named the preliminary reasons that led to the tragedy. Among the factors that led to the tragic events, was the fact that the state leadership did not introduce martial law in the country.
