This was announced by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

“They are standing up for what they believe in. Fighting for our values. Protecting democracy, freedom & rule of law. Risking their lives for us. And today proud winners of the Sakharov Prize. No one is more deserving. Congratulations to the brave people of Ukraine,” she wrote on Twitter.

Established in 1988, the Sakharov award was named in honour of Soviet physicist and political dissident Andrei Sakharov. In 2018, the Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov won the prize, being at the time in Russian jail. Sentsov received the award a year later.
