Russia loses 800 soldiers, 28 artillery systems and 17 armored vehicles in one day of war in Ukraine – General Staff

In the Avdiivka direction, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are holding back the Russian troops, trying to surround Avdiivka, while in the Kherson direction, the Russian army is trying to drive Ukrainian units out of their positions

The Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff reported the information.

Russia's total combat losses from February 24, 2022 to December 24, 2023 are estimated to be:

  • personnel - about 353,190 (+800)
  • tanks - 5,858 (+4)
  • armored fighting vehicles - 10,888 (+17)
  • artillery systems - 8,314 (+28)
  • MLRS - 932 (+0)
  • air defense systems - 611 (+0)
  • aircraft - 327 (+0)
  • helicopters - 324 (+0)
  • UAV operational-tactical level - 6,404 (+20)
  • cruise missiles - 1,614 (+1)
  • ships/boats - 22 (+0)
  • submarines - 1 (+0)
  • vehicles and tank trucks - 11,022 (+27)
  • special equipment - 1,229 (+6)

Russian attacks

On the night of December 24, invading Russian forces attacked Ukraine using 16 Shahed-136/131 UAVs. Ukrainian air defense destroyed 15 attack UAVs.

Over the past day, 81 combat clashes took place. In total, the Russian army launched 11 missiles, 34 air strikes, and 62 MLRS attacks at Ukrainian troops' positions and populated areas. Unfortunately, Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in deaths and injuries among the civilian population. Private homes and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.

Russian air strikes hit 6 settlements in Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk regions.

About 100 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions came under Russian artillery fire.

Situation in the main directions 

In the area of the northern Ukrainian border with Belarus, the operational situation has not changed.

In the northeastern border area, the Russian army maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts active sabotage activities to prevent the deployment of Ukrainian troops to threatened areas, and increases the density of minefields along the state border in the Belgorod region.

In the Kupyansk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 17 Russian attacks near Synkivka, Kharkiv region. Russian troops unsuccessfully tried to break through the Ukrainian defense.

In the Lyman direction, the invading Russian army did not conduct any offensive (assault) actions.

In the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian soldiers fended off 11 Russian attacks near the settlements of Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka and Andriivka in the Donetsk region.

In the Avdiivka direction, Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back Russian troops in their attempt to encircle Avdiivka. Ukrainian soldiers are steadfastly holding the line, inflicting significant losses on Russian forces. Ukrainian defense forces fought off 25 Russian attacks east of Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, as well as 15 attacks near Sievierne, Pervomaiske and Nevelske, Donetsk region.

In the Marinka direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces hold back Russian forces near Marinka and Novomykhailivka, Donetsk region. Ukrainian defenders repelled 4 attacks.

In the Shakhtarsk direction, the invading Russian army did not conduct offensive (assault) actions.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, Ukrainian Defense Forces stopped all Russian attacks near Robotyne and northwest of Verbove, Zaporizhzhia region.

In the Kherson direction, Ukrainian troops continue to expand their foothold. Despite significant losses, the Russian military continue their attempts to drive Ukrainian troops from their positions. Thus, over the past day, the Russian army made 17 unsuccessful assault attacks and retreated.

Ukrainian Armed Forces inflict losses on occupying Russian army in manpower and equipment

The Ukrainian Defense Forces inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the Russian forces, depleting them along the entire front line.

Over the past day, Ukrainian aviation struck 18 concentrations of Russian personnel, weapons and military equipment and 5 anti-aircraft missile systems. Ukrainina air defense also destroyed 1 Kh-59 guided missile and 2 Russian reconnaissance UAVs.

Ukrainian missile troops struck 6 concentrations of Russian personnel, weapons and military equipment, a radar station, 2 artillery pieces, 3 ammunition depots and a control center.

  • Over the past day, December 23, 57 combat clashes took place at the frontline. The Ukrainian Armed Forces are holding the line on the left bank of the Dnipro River, continuing to hold their positions and inflicting fire on the Russian army.
