Ukraine’s May air strikes focus on key Russian strategic targets
Ukraine’s air force hit command posts, drone control centers, and ammo depots amid growing Russian air attacks, especially in Sumy region
Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat told Ukrainska Pravda that Russia has recently stepped up its attacks. Russian forces regularly carry out air strikes, especially in the Sumy region, which faces the most attacks from precision-guided bombs reaching 20–25 km deep.
At the same time, Ihnat said Ukrainian forces also strike enemy targets with precision-guided bombs. Every day, Ukrainian aviation launches anti-radiation missiles of different types, as well as guided bombs made in the U.S. and France.
“This is very high-precision weaponry, highly praised by pilots. They hit, as they say, within a radius of one meter exactly on target,” added the Air Force spokesman.
He explained that in May, Ukrainian strikes hit Russian command posts and drone control points, which are especially important to destroy today.
“Unmanned aircraft and different types of drones are becoming more common, and both we and, unfortunately, the enemy use them effectively in attacks. That’s why drone control points are a top priority. We also target ammunition depots, equipment — basically anything the senior commander orders. Our reconnaissance works well, and everything gets destroyed,” the Air Force spokesman emphasized.
He also stressed that Russia uses precision-guided bombs nearly ten times more often. According to Ihnat, Russia drops so many guided bombs that they can destroy entire settlements using a breakthrough tactic first seen in Avdiivka.
“If you remember, back then about 200 guided bombs were dropped daily. That was a lot for that time. Now, we see these attacks almost constantly along the front line. This shows an escalation of fighting. The enemy strikes with guided bombs and other weapons, including unguided aviation missiles,” Ihnat explained.
He added that Russia also attacks Ukraine’s rear with nighttime drone strikes using Shahed drones and imitator drones. In May, the Ukrainian Defense Forces destroyed over 3,800 Russian aerial targets, the Air Force spokesman reported.
