Ukraine’s chances to get ATACMS rise as US considers providing missiles to support country's defense
After a long period of resistance, officials in Washington now feel urgency to deliver the upgraded missile system
Washington has been considering approving a long-range missile system for Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, June 29, citing the US and European officials.
The move comes after the failed armed mutiny in Russia and some uncertainty on the battlefield in Ukraine, the media outlet pointed out.
The publication claims that a high-ranking Ukrainian defense official said that in recent weeks Ukraine has received positive signs that the US has changed its stance on the supply of ATACMS missiles.
WSJ writes that officials in the United States and Europe have also noticed signs that a previously reluctant White House and other officials in the US government now see an urgent need to bolster Ukraine’s capabilities on the battlefield in the coming weeks.
US President Joe Biden has long declined to provide the advanced ATACMS system, fearing that this would escalate the fight with Russia. However after the attempted military coup organized by the financier of the Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin, the delivery of US-made Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to Ukraine may get a green light.
On June 21, the US House Foreign Affairs Committee passed a bipartisan resolution calling on the Biden administration to immediately provide Army Tactical Missile Systems to Ukraine.
