Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, shared the information on the United News national telethon on May 15.
"The number of Russian soldiers is much lower than it was a few months ago. As we previously reported, the number of Russian soldiers could reach 10,000 to 11,000 people," he said and noted that now there are 2,500 of them left.
According to the spokesman, Russian military units trained in Belarus are returning to Russia and then being redeployed to eastern Ukraine.
"So far, we see that many units are being withdrawn from Belarus, but there is no replenishment of training grounds," Demchenko summarized.
He said that the situation on the border with Belarus is under control.
