Former Defense Minister Umerov to lead Ukrainian delegation in talks with Russia
Ukraine's former Defense Minister and current Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, will head the Ukrainian delegation in the third round of talks with Russia. The delegation will also include representatives from intelligence, the Foreign Ministry, and the President’s Office
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared the update on Telegram after a meeting.
According to him, Ukraine is continuing negotiations with Russia on the release of prisoners, the return of abducted children, and a halt to hostilities. Umerov reported on the implementation of agreements reached during the second meeting in Istanbul and plans for a new round of talks soon.
“Our position is fully transparent. Ukraine never wanted this war, and it is Russia that must end the war that it started,” Zelenskyy said.
The President also ordered the formation of an official Ukrainian delegation for negotiations with Russia. It will be led by Rustem Umerov and include officials from intelligence, the Foreign Ministry, and the President’s Office.
Zelenskyy's aide Andriy Yermak, meanwhile, reported on ongoing diplomatic coordination with European and U.S. partners.
The first round of Ukraine-Russia talks in Istanbul took place on May 16, 2025, and the second on June 2. The date of the third round has not been set.
- According to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, during the June 2 meeting in Istanbul, Russia responded to Ukraine’s constructive proposals with a usual set of ultimatums. The only agreement reached was on a prisoner exchange, there was no deal on a ceasefire.
