Ukraine summons Canadian representative over turbine transfer for Nord Stream - Zelensky
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Canadian envoy over the the transfer to Germany of a turbine for the North Stream Russian-German gas pipeline.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated this in an address, reports Espreso.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had to summon the representative of Canada in our country due to an absolutely unacceptable exception to the sanctions regime against Russia. This is not just about some turbine for the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which Canada was not supposed to, but still decided to hand over. Actually, hand it over to Russia. This concerns common rules," Zelensky said.
The President of Ukraine suggested that exemptions from the sanctions policy would encourage Russia to put pressure on the West, in particular by completely stopping gas supplies to European countries.
"If a terrorist state can squeeze out such an exception to sanctions, what exceptions will it want tomorrow or the day after tomorrow? This question is very dangerous. And it is dangerous not only for Ukraine, but also for all countries of the democratic world. Decisions on sanctions exception will be accepted in Moscow exclusively as a manifestation of weakness. Such is their logic. And right now there can be no doubt that Russia will try not just to limit as much as possible, but also to completely stop, at the most critical moment, the supply of gas to Europe. This is what we must now prepare for, this is what is being provoked now. Because every concession under such conditions is perceived by the Russian leadership as an incentive for further, stronger pressure," Zelensky said.
The President emphasized that the decision on the transfer of the turbine can still be reviewed.
"Of course, it is still possible to revise this decision about one turbine, which entails many other problems. Russia has never played by the rules in energy and will not play now if it does not see power," Zelensky said.
