Ukraine requests Finnish F/A-18 fighters – Helsingin Sanomat
Ukraine submitted a request to Finland to discuss the possibility of transferring F/A-18 Hornet fighters
This is reported by the Finnish publication Helsingin Sanomat.
Kyiv sent a request to Finland for a tripartite discussion between Finland, Ukraine and the USA. The transfer of combat aircraft will be possible only after the process is approved by the White House, because the F/A-18 Hornet is produced by an American defense company.
Helsingin Sanomat notes that Ukraine's request for discussion is a reaction to the words of the Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin. During her visit to Kyiv in March, she noted that Finland, together with other allies, could consider providing Ukraine with F/A-18 fighter jets.
"I think we could discuss the Hornet fighter jets - whether it would be possible to offer them to Ukraine, what training is needed for this," Marin said.
In the case of a successful discussion, Helsinki will receive US-made F-35 fighter jets to replace the Hornet fighters.
