Ukraine needs 4.6 million more workers to sustain economic growth — expert
The President of the All-Ukrainian Association of International Employment Companies, Vasyl Voskoboynyk, says that even if Ukrainians start returning en masse, the country will still face a shortage of people
He stated this in an interview with Espreso TV host Yuriy Fizer.
“If the population in the country decreases, it creates problems for employers, as the question arises: where to find labor? As a result, the number of taxpayers and consumers of goods and services produced in Ukraine decreases, which in turn leads to a decline in the country’s GDP,” Voskoboynyk explained.
The president of the All-Ukrainian Association of International Employment Companies added that, according to estimates from Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy, in order to maintain GDP growth at a rate of 7% over the next seven years, the country needs to attract an additional 4.6 million workers.
“And that’s in addition to the number of workers Ukraine had in 2021. Where will these workers come from? Even if Ukrainians start returning in large numbers, the country still won’t have the same population it had before,” Voskoboynyk emphasized.
- Ella Libanova, Director of the Ptukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, believes that after the war, there will be no ageism in Ukraine, as the labor shortage in the country is inevitable.
