No toxic substances found in Seim River, it's organic pollution - Ukraine's State Environmental Inspectorate
Ihor Zubovych, acting head of Ukraine's State Environmental Inspectorate, says that due to hot weather conditions, oxygen levels in water bodies are decreasing, which leads to the death of bioresources
He said this on Espreso TV.
"From the very beginning, when the dirty water started flowing through the Sumy region, we started collecting water samples, and now we continue to collect them in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. We are gradually preparing for the arrival of this water in the Kyiv region. I can say that all services have not confirmed any toxic substances or chemical pollution. This is organic pollution, which means that there is actually a decrease in oxygen, because the weather is very dry and hot, which leads to the death of biological resources in Ukrainian water bodies," commented the acting head of the State Environmental Inspectorate.
According to him, about 11 tons of dead fish were collected and localized in the Sumy region.
"Unfortunately, the biological resources of the Seim and Desna rivers are dying. All the relevant services are now trying to ensure that dead fish do not get further into water bodies. These fish are collected and fences are put up to prevent them from reaching markets and consumers. Accordingly, the public is being informed, fishing is prohibited, and government services are doing everything possible to localize the consequences of this environmental situation," summarized Ihor Zubovych.
- The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources conducted a water quality monitoring and found that the situation was completely controlled.
- Oleh Lystopad, an expert of the Network for the Protection of National Interests of the ANTS, an ecologist, noted that a large amount of organic pollution led to massive fish deaths in the Seim River.
